Sound Pure's Take

This spectacular high-gloss nitrocellulose Collings 002H AT is a breathtaking example of world-class lutherie, delivering immense tonal headroom and crystalline detail from a wonderfully light 3-pound 10-ounce frame. Anchored by a premium Adirondack spruce top and lush East Indian rosewood back and sides, this short-scale instrument utilizes pre-war scalloped Sitka spruce X-bracing to unleash a deeply complex, punchy voice packed with warm lows and pristine, bell-like trebles. The Honduran mahogany neck features a traditional modified V-profile and a tapered slotted square peghead with an elegant volute, transitioning beautifully to a compound-radius ebony fingerboard adorned with short diamond and square abalone inlays. Every inch of this masterpiece exudes meticulous vintage elegance, from the traditional herringbone purfling and ivoroid binding to the nickel Waverly tuners and an ebony pyramid-style bridge. Completed by a stained exotic ebony headstock veneer with a mother-of-pearl Collings logo, this highly responsive instrument ships inside its deluxe hardshell case, ready to inspire your best work.

From Collings Guitars

We offer the 00 in its original 12-fret configuration (click here for our 14-fret version), a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War. Its dimensions are similar to a typical classical guitar, with a slotted headstock and small pyramid bridge. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone is typically balanced and precise, and we’ve seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from simple vocal accompaniment to ragtime solos. When you want the durability of a modern guitar but one that appears rooted in an earlier, simpler time, the 00 is a versatile choice.

001 vs 002H vs 003

While all three models share the same body dimensions, key differences are outlined below.

Our 1-style (001) features Honduran mahogany back and sides with tortoise body binding and butt wedge, b/w/b/w top purfling, a walnut backstrip, dot fingerboard inlays, and a simpler 1-style rosette.

Our 2-style (002H) features East Indian rosewood back and sides with ivoroid body binding and butt wedge, herringbone top purfling, a “zipper” backstrip, diamonds and squares fingerboard inlays, and a more intricate 2-style rosette.

Our 3-style (003) features East Indian rosewood back and sides with ivoroid body/fingerboard/peghead binding and butt wedge, no herringbone top purfling, a “chevron” backstrip, no fingerboard inlays, and an abalone rosette.

Standard (002H) vs Traditional (002H T)

While both models share the same body dimensions, key differences are outlined below.

Our standard series instruments (non-T) offer the classic Collings voice, which features shimmery highs, a punchy midrange, a tight and clean low end, and maximum headroom with a quick response.  The standard neck profile is our Modified V with 1 13/16″ nut width and 2 5/16″ string spacing.  Standard instruments also offer a wider range of custom options than Traditionals.

Our Traditional series instruments (T) offer a slightly looser, more “broken in” feel and tone, featuring a rounder high end and fuller low midrange, along with our Traditional aesthetic appointments, such as gold MOP inlays and custom wood purflings and rosette.  Traditional models also feature an ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer body finish, abbreviated soundboard graft (tongue brace), and a unique neck construction designed to complement the looser feel and voicing, along with our Traditional neck carve and 1 3/4″ nut width.  Due to the vintage-inspired vision for these guitars, Traditional instruments are offered with limited custom options.
