Sound Pure's Take

The Moog Music Sub 37 might be the most versatile and best sounding synth on the market. It has the routing capabilities of a massive modular, but in a compact, intuitive desktop chassis. You still get the warm, smooth analog signal path, but the instrument is made a little more accessible by adding digital controls. For those familiar with the Moog Little Phatty Stage II, don't be fooled by the Sub 37's similar size and shape. This is an entirely different beast, and so much more evolved. Going back to knob-per-function design, which the LP began to stray away from, the user can easily manipulate both subtle and drastic parameters of sound, of which there are many. With all the knobs, switches, and buttons on the front, you are saved from excessive menu-diving that you often endure with other digitally controlled synths. As someone who worked at the factory, I calibrated and tested thousands of these units and really got to know the instrument on an intimate level. Here I will outline some of the more stand-out features. This being a "short" description of the 37, I'll try not to get too deep.

The most obvious new feature is the Duo Mode. With this mode engaged, the synth becomes duophonic, or as Moog calls it, "paraphonic". This allows oscillator 2 to play a separate note, designated as either the high or low note. This becomes really cool when you start using the mod busses on the 2 oscillators independently. You can also do some really interesting things with the sequencer when duo mode is engaged.

Another incredible feature of the Sub 37, and a first for Moog's current product line, is the built-in step sequencer, which is tied in with the arpeggiator section. Switch the pattern to REC (record) and play a sequence of notes, then switch to SEQ. Now you can hit any key to play back the sequence, transposing it based on the selected key. Also, the ON and LATCH buttons act as REST (silent step) and TIE (EG gate stays open between steps) for the sequencer in REC mode.

The Sub 37 also features an amazing amount of control over the filter section. The filter and amplifier EGs feature independent latch, loop, sync (to LFO, or MIDI clock), reset, and multi-trig.

The biggest selling point for me is the amount of modulation control this synth features. This is first "Phatty" to feature a 2nd modulation buss (previously only featured on the Voyager models), with 15 mod sources and any parameter as a programmable destination. Each mod buss features a 5-waveform LFO (2 LFOs being another first for the Moog product line) with an additional 10 programmable sources, high and low settings, ability to sync to the arpeggiator/sequencer or MIDI clock, and ability to be designated as the other's destination, for some sweet LFO on LFO action.

Tips and Tricks:
  • Destination programming is super easy: push and hold the MOD AMT knob and twist any other knob to set as your mod destination.
  • Push and hold any knob while twisting any other knob for instant pot-mapping.
  • In the arp/seq section, hold BANK and press LATCH to enter or exit STEP EDIT MODE, which shows each step of your sequence along the preset buttons. In this mode you can edit each step of the sequence: skip steps, add modulation to individual steps, shift the whole pattern, and more.
  • Latch and loop the filter EG, and, without syncing, you essentially have a third (filter-only) LFO. Tweak attack and decay to adjust the speed. You can also sync the filter loop to the arp/seq/MIDI clock, or assign it as a mod source.
  • Use the high settings on the LFOs and/or variable length EG loops to achieve some very intense FM synthesis.

All of this is just the beginning. The functionality of this synth is unparalleled, but as deep as the features go, it's still relatively easy to play, whether you come from the world of sound design or a more musical, keyboard oriented background.
